If you've ever searched for 'how much does bespoke jewellery cost UK' online, you've probably found wildly different answers. That's because bespoke jewellery pricing isn't straightforward, and honestly, that frustrates people. I get it. You want a number, a ballpark, something to work with.
I'm Hamed Arab, founder of Silux London and an award-winning jewellery designer with seven years at Britain's largest fine jewellery manufacturer. I've created everything from 800 personalised bands to 8,000+ statement pieces, and I've had this conversation hundreds of times. So let me give you the honest breakdown of bespoke jewellery costs and what you're actually paying for.
Why Bespoke Jewellery Pricing Is Complex
When someone asks me for a quote without any details, it's like asking a builder how much a house costs. The answer depends on size, materials, location, complexity, and a dozen other factors.
The Metal: Understanding Gold, Platinum, and Weight
9ct vs 18ct vs Platinum
9ct gold (37.5% pure gold) is the most affordable option. It's more durable because of the alloy mix, but it has less gold content.
18ct gold (75% pure gold) is the standard for luxury jewellery. It has a richer colour, better longevity, and holds stones more securely. The same band in 18ct might cost nearly double the 9ct version.
Platinum is the premium choice. It's denser, hypoallergenic, and naturally white. A platinum ring that looks identical to an 18ct white gold one will weigh significantly more and cost considerably more.
Current market rate per gram for 18ct gold (prices fluctuate)
How Weight Affects Price
Gold is priced per gram. A delicate engagement ring might use 4-6 grams of 18ct gold. A chunky signet ring could use 15-20 grams. At current market rates (fluctuating between 45-60 per gram for 18ct), that's the difference between 240 in metal costs and 1,000+ before we've even started designing.
Gemstones: Where Costs Can Skyrocket
Diamonds and the 4Cs
Everyone talks about the 4Cs (cut, colour, clarity, carat), but here's what actually matters for your budget:
- A 0.5ct diamond can cost anywhere from 800 to 3,000+ depending on quality
- A 1ct diamond ranges from 2,500 to 10,000+
- Prioritising cut over colour often gives you better visual impact for less money
Coloured Gemstones and Persian Turquoise
Coloured stones are more personal and often better value. At Silux London, we specialise in Persian turquoise, which has a distinctive intense blue colour. Quality Persian turquoise can range from 50 to 500+ per carat depending on the grade and origin. It's a signature of our work and often provides a striking, unique alternative to more traditional gemstones.
Labour and Design Time
A simple band with engraving might take 6-10 hours of work total (design consultation, CAD modelling, casting, finishing, hallmarking). That's 200-400 in labour.
A complex engagement ring with a halo setting, pav diamonds, and intricate under-gallery work could take 20-30 hours. That's 600-1,000+ in labour alone.
A statement pendant with hand-fabricated elements and multiple stone settings might require 40-60 hours. You're looking at 1,200-2,000+ just for the making.

Hidden Costs to Ask About
Don't Be Caught Out
- . Hallmarking: UK legal requirement for precious metals (30-80)
- . Insurance valuation: Professional written valuation (50-150)
- . Presentation packaging: Ring boxes, pouches (20-100)
- . Design revisions: How many CAD revisions are included? (I include 2-3 rounds)
- . Resizing: Is one resize included? (I always include this)
- . Delivery and insurance: Shipping costs for valuable items (15-30)
How to Get the Best Value
1. Have a Clear Brief
The more you know about what you want, the more efficiently we can work. Vague briefs lead to more revisions and higher costs.
2. Trust the Process
I'll suggest where to invest and where to save. Sometimes a smaller, better-quality diamond looks more impressive than a larger, lower-quality one.
3. Prioritise What Matters
If you're never taking the ring off, invest in durability. If it's a statement piece for occasions, you can optimise differently.
4. Be Open About Budget
Tell me your budget upfront. I'd rather design something brilliant at 2,000 than disappoint you with a 5,000 quote.
Why Bespoke Can Be Better Value Than High Street
When you buy from a major jewellery brand, you're paying for retail rent, marketing budgets, brand premium, and multiple markup stages. A 3,000 engagement ring from a high street brand might have 1,000 worth of materials and 500 of labour. The rest is markup.
